Day of the Dead Cookies for your Ofrenda
Day of the Dead Cookies for your Ofrenda
Some of the sweetest things on an ofrenda are the ones they loved most. These Day of the Dead cookies are made for that place of honor: 80 Mexican Heritage cookies from our four-generation family recipe, paired with our Día de los Muertos Calavera card so you can write a few words to the ones who came before us.
What’s inside
- Mexican Heritage Cookie Variety Tin: 80 cookies (Lunas, Stellas, and Valentinas) in our signature vintage-inspired tin
- Día de los Muertos Calavera card: skull imagery that stands for celebration, memory, and life after life, not fear
Traditional Day of the Dead Cookies From Our Family Recipe
Our cookies come from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. They carry the traditions of Mexican wedding cookies, biscochitos (some families call them bizcochos), polvorones, and pan de polvo, the crumbly, buttery cookies so many of us grew up with.
Lunas: our classic powdered sugar cookie, tender and melt-in-your-mouth, with bits of toasted pecan that take you back to your abuela’s kitchen.
Stellas: light and delicately spiced with warm cinnamon sugar. They’re like a Southwest biscochito, but without anise. Stellas are our only nut-free cookie.
Valentinas: our heart-shaped cookie, slightly crisp and fragrant with freshly ground Mexican cinnamon and sugar.
For Your Ofrenda
Alongside photos, candles, cempasúchil, papel picado, water, and salt, families set out the foods their loved ones enjoyed. Place a few cookies on a plate beside the pan de muerto, tuck the card among the photos, and share the rest of the tin with everyone who comes to remember.
A Remembrance Gift for Family Near and Far
For someone who is grieving, or a family member setting up their first ofrenda without you there, this tin says what is hard to put into words. Write a memory or their loved one’s name inside the card. It is a gift that is opened, shared, and kept.
Because remembering is a form of love.

FAQ
What are Mexican Wedding Cookies?
Mexican Wedding Cookies — also known as polvorones, pan de polvo, Russian tea cakes, or snowball cookies — are delicate, melt-in-your-mouth cookies dusted in powdered sugar. Romero Cookies are made from a 40-year family recipe, perfect for weddings, holidays, and everyday celebrations.
Are Romero Cookies the same as biscochitos or bizcochitos?
While they look similar, Romero Mexican Wedding Cookies are not biscochitos. They don’t contain anise and are not made with lard. We often hear regional debates about cookie names — try ours and you might prefer them!
What makes Romero Cookies authentic?
Our recipe has been in the Romero family for over 40 years. Every cookie is handmade in our Denver kitchen with simple, high-quality ingredients that melt in your mouth.
How long do Romero Mexican Wedding Cookies stay fresh?
Our cookies stay fresh for up to 90 days in tins or favor containers and about 30 days if placed in a cookie tray. While freezing won’t harm them, we recommend enjoying them fresh for the best flavor and texture.
Are Mexican Wedding Cookies just for weddings?
Not at all! While they began as a wedding tradition, Mexican Wedding Cookies are now enjoyed at birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and everyday gatherings. They also make thoughtful gifts for teachers, coworkers, and family.
